Welcoming your baby into this world
We know the excitement of welcoming a baby into
this world - we've done it seven times ourselves! And we've shared
the celebration with many others.
Shalom Zachor
A Shalom Zachor (welcome male child) is a get together celebrated
on the first Friday night of a baby boy's life. Usually mum and
bub aren't present, because they're still in the hospital (which
is all the more reason why you might need us to help out!)
Bris Mila
The Bris Mila (ritual circumsision) occurs on the eighth day of
a baby boy's life. It is customary to have this ceremony performed
early in the morning. It gives us great pleasure to prepare a big
breakfast for males to partake in, before heading off to work.
Pidyon HaBen
A Pidyon HaBen (redemption of the firstborn male) happens on the
thirtieth day of a baby boy's life. It only occurs if the boy is
a firstborn. The ritual involves the father buying back his son
from the duty of service as a priest from a cohen. You'll need a
couple of silver coins and something to eat!
Baby Naming
A girl's name is officially given in shule when the father has an
aliyah after the birth. This is usually followed by a sumptuous
kiddish.
L'Chaim
Many people choose to welcome a baby girl into this world with a
l'chaim at home, when the baby arrives home from hospital.
